Chicago French Bulldog Rescue Announces $15,000 Challenge Grant

A $15,000 challenge grant to support French Bulldogs in need has been awarded to the Chicago French Bulldog Rescue (CFBR). The privately funded dollar-for-dollar matching grant will add $30,000 to support the activities of the CFBR, which is one of the few rescues that tries to tackle the puppy mill problem head-on.

Donate Now!

The deadline for the match is April 1st.

This grant comes at a wonderful time," says Mary Scheffke, Director and President of CFBR. "A perfect storm of the recession, coupled with the increase in popularity of the breed, means that many more Frenchies are being bred and therefore many more are coming into our rescue. Having additional funding will allow us to rescue more Frenchies than ever before, and we will not have to leave a Frenchie who needs us behind. As our generous donor also believes, it is imperative that we at least try to help versus turning a blind eye."

CFBR's methodology is to pay the bare minimum at auctions for Frenchies that are so sick and neglected that to leave them in the system would be devastating. Constant monitoring of puppy mill auctions and their practices provides as much insurance as possible that the rescue money isn't propagating the cycle.

How You Can Help

The challenge grant must be met in six months, therefore we need your help right away. All donations will be matched, regardless of dollar amount. Your $5 donation will be turned into $10, $50 into $100 and $500 into $1000. You can double your donation today. As the holidays draw near, consider making a donation to CFBR in someone's honor or in their memory. We are also planning some wonderful events, fundraisers and online auctions to help us meet our goal. Please check back for more information or join our mailing list and we'll keep you updated. Thank you.

Donor Statement

"Puppy mills continue to be a source for poor quality and health-challenged French Bulldogs, with horrendous living conditions for those kept in captivity. Generally, rescues will shy away from participating in puppy mill auctions on the basis that it takes away funds from other Frenchies in need and that it provides funds back into the cycle. My belief is that attacking the root cause of the puppy mill cycle may at some point diminish the numbers of puppy mills in operation, in other words, it is better to have tried to do something rather than sit back and let it perpetuate. Having watched Chicago French Bulldog Rescue over the past years, I am convinced that they share the same view and that they are willing to step up to the plate to fill this void in French Bulldog rescue. To that end, I am committing a dollar for dollar match, for funds raised by CFBR, up to $15,000.00 to allow CFBR to participate in the 2012 Spring auctions at which puppy mills are being dispersed."

Hanks' therapy session

Here is the link to Hanks' therapy session- he is doing well at therapy and slowly getting stronger- still need donations to help pay for him to possibly walk again- please help and donate! or something creative- see what you donations are helping to do for Hank?

Help us help Hank walk again!

We are still raising funds to help get Hank walking again. His professional therapy is going to cost us $3000 for all his visits. The initial money we raised will be used to cover his MRI, speciality consult, meds and therapy consults and his temporary wheelchair.

Hank Update!

Today we found out Hank has spina bifoda -not a hemi BUT that is NOT what made him not able to walk! So today we did an MRI, as the specialists were curious to see if they could find anything else going on. At first, they thought he was not walking due to the spina bifoda-BUT the MRI showed something that has the specialist perplexed and curious. There are SOME CHANGES going on in his spine- they have ruled out any tumors but something is going on that they have not seen before.
Our plan of action at this time is to put him on steriods. if they are going to help, we should see changes in a week- this is a good thing. Mary will be doing e stem with him and some therapy exercises. We will be setting up an appointment with the therapy specialists that have done wonders with Hope. The specialist that saw Hank today feels there is hope that he MAY walk again- therapy, drugs and time will tell.
Our work is NOT done with Hanks' journey yet! Donations will help pay for his MRI and exam and drugs today and as they come in- they will help with his rehab therapy. Keep those prayers and donations coming- let's get Hank walking again! Thanks for everyone's help and support.

Hope

This is our HOPE.  Hope came into rescue last week.  Barely 8 mos. old, Hope has several genetic spinal conditions; and lost the use of her back legs at 4 mos. of age.   Infested with fleas, ear infection, nails that were curled under and pressure sores from dragging herself around; yet despite everything her personality was shining from the minute we met her!  Full of life and expression, courage and determination, Hope meets her challenges bravely.    She has been to Forest South, Purdue University and Integrative Pet Care.   On Monday, August 17, she had spay surgery and a large hernia removed.  She recovered quickly from the anesthesia, and went home with Mary that very night.   Mary has worked with her about 4 times a day on range of motion, massage and exercises.    Dr. Julie Mayor met her and was AMAZED at the progress she has made in the last FEW DAYS.... we are ordering a wheelchair for Hope.   There is a possibility, with the right therapies and treatments, that Hope will walk again!   She truly fits her name.   She needs your help to ensure she gets all the medical treatments, care and therapy that can help.   She is truly one amazing little girl, and reminds us all why we do what we do.  Click the DONATE button to give Hope a helping hand!!
